Peirce Profiles 2011

Earle & JoAnn:  This has been an outstanding, memorable and fun year for us.  Highlights of the year:   We celebrated our fiftieth year of marriage.   In April, our entire family converged at Capistrano Beach in California for a week to celebrate our anniversary.   We stayed in a wonderful gated beach house just 15 steps from the ocean.  All 34 of us were most comfortable in the 9 bedroom, 6 bathroom, and 2 large family room house.  Evenings were spent enjoying one another, including programs, tributes and skits in regards to our 50 years as a family.   The familys’ thoughts were sweet and touching and sometimes rib-splittingly hilarious.  Indeed, precious remembrances!!!  The Southern California attractions the family took advantage of were:  Legoland, Sea World, Disneyland, San Diego Temple, San Juan Capistrano Mission, Mormon Battalion Monument, Old Town San Diego, Knotts Berry Farm, San Diego Zoo, and the U.S.S. Midway (on which Ed had served while in the Navy).  We also made sure we saved plenty of beach time.  The grandchildren loved the hot tub, building sand castles, swimming, riding the waves, and seeing porpoises and dolphins, and thousands of sea birds right from our private beach.   The beach house was in an amazingly beautiful location.  There was such a sweet spirit the entire week.   We did not want to see that choice and precious time together end.  Soooo, we are planning another family trip for the year 2013!   Possibly at the same place! 

We spent our actual anniversary at the Zermatt in Midway (a gift from our children) and had a wonderful relaxing couple of days just enjoying the quiet and beauty of one of our most favorite get-away places. 

In August, JoAnn’s siblings honored us with an evening at Lon’s home.   We enjoyed the luscious food and sweet tributes.  We were especially pleased to have Jessie and Don and Louise and Richard there.   What a remarkable group of people.  No one could have finer siblings.  We love you!!! 

Later in August, we flew to Kona, Hawaii for a week and did all the fantastic things you do at a luxurious resort, as well as doing much sight-seeing.  However, the most memorable will be our experience attending the Kona Temple, and then church the following the day.   The spirit of the Hawaiian members is extraordinary! 

This year, on July 13th, we were blessed with another adorable granddaughter. Megan Lydia was born with the thickest and longest black hair (3 inches long).  Her dark hair and olive skin made her the perfect baby Jesus in our Christmas nativity.   Megan was named and blessed on the same day that her brother Landon was baptized.   

We continue to enjoy our monthly family get-togethers and are so grateful the children and grandchildren love them as much as we do.  We consider these times highlights as well. 

We reviewed our comments of this last year, and not much has changed.   Earle is still the High Priests Group Leader, and recently planned, organized and carried out a wonderful Ward Christmas Social.   It was the best social the ward has had in a long time.   He continues with his tennis, exercise, and temple work.   He recently spent several hours recording a CD of some of his favorite piano, ukulele, and voice musical numbers for his children and grandchildren for Christmas.  He has experienced frequent heart atrial fibrillation this past year or two; so this past week, he underwent surgery (ablation) to hopefully correct the problem.   JoAnn still patronizes Curves several times a week and then walks the treadmill at home.  Earle’s committment to exercise is rubbing off on her.  Now, if she could just eat as healthy as he does!!! She continues teaching Primary and serving as an ordinance worker in the Draper Temple.   We are looking forward to traveling to Germany and Switzerland this summer.   We are most envious of Jean and Rex serving a mission.  They are and will continue to be in our prayers.   We already miss them so much.

Ed & Marsha and Family:  This past year is almost a carbon copy of our previous report, so I will start off with our big events, and then do a refresher on each of us.   Our big event was our family vacation to California to celebrate our parent’s 50th wedding anniversary which I am sure is the highlight of my parents and all the Peirce kids.  No matter how fun all the amusements parks were, the most favorite part was just hanging out at the beach house with family.   Even though we were there for a week, it was way too short.

The other big event for our family was that Marsha’s mother returned to her homeland, the Philippines, in November.   It was wonderful having her in our home for such a long time and she is greatly missed.   She missed her homeland and her friends there and felt she needed to go home.  Also, at her age, she needed affordable access to healthcare, which unfortunately our nation does not provide to legal immigrants who are not citizens.  She has a medical condition that can be treated there.

Marsha is still working at our local elementary school as an para educator in special education.  It’s nice for her to be able to walk with the kids to school and be in the same building as they are during the school day.  I don’t believe I have mentioned this about Marsha in past newsletters, but she is a great cook.  In our home the microwave is hardly ever used. Instant and frozen meals are very rare.  Marsha cooks dinner from scratch every single night.   At the grocery store, the produce section is the most important.  I mention this because I think we are so lucky to have her prepare our meals, not just because of the great taste, but for our health.   She’s a great wife and mother.  

Garrett is almost 11 years old.  He is our shy boy.  He won’t talk to most people, but we are hopeful he will break out of his shell one day.   He loves music and got an electric guitar from Santa on Christmas.  The only obstacle now is how to play it.   Garrett and I have started to learn with DVD lessons.  If anyone knows a good guitar instructor who works well with special needs kids, let us know.  Garrett is a bright boy and is at the top of his class in everything.  However, he does have a condition that holds him back from learning to socialize, but we are hopeful we will see some improvement in the future. 

Meadow is 7 years old and is bubbling with personality.  She is shy with new people, but once she gets to know you, she is all laughs and smiles.   Like Garrett, Meadow is at the top of her class.   She especially loves reading.  I would have to give Marsha the credit since she reads with the kids every night.  Meadow is our artist.  She is extremely creative.  I am amazed at the  things she makes with glue, paper, scissors, etc.  

As for me, I am still working at the Post Office as a mechanic.  I see my cousin Curtis there often.   I am impressed that he is such a hard worker and so likeable.  I am approaching my 50th birthday and find that quite depressing.   

Lynda and Scott and Family:Dallin is now 11 years old and in the sixth grade.  Dallin is a good student and has a funny sense of humor.   He also has some awesome dance moves. 

Nick is 16 and loves having his driver’s license and also loves his job working at Payson Jr. High School cleaning after school.   He got his braces off this past year and has shot up in height and now is the tallest in our family.  He’s quite a handsome young man!

Lauren worked most of the year as a care giver for an elderly woman making fairly good money.  In October she changed to Heartwood Hospice where she cares for several elderly patients.   She has quite a knack and talent for this type of work.  Her patients love her!

Eric works early mornings at Old Navy and goes to school in the afternoons at UVU.  He is a great student, getting all A’s.  He is the salt of the earth kind of young man and will be a great catch for a lucky lady some day.

Lynda found a new love by taking tennis lessons in the spring.    She and a friend play tennis 2-3 times a week.  She’s now determined to get good enough to beat her dad.   

Scott turned the BIG 50 in October.  In celebration, Lynda and Scott enjoyed the most amazing week in Maui, Hawaii.  They spent a lot of time snorkeling (a new love of theirs).  They loved beaching, including watching the many sea turtles.  Scott was  particularly excited to golf on some of the beautiful courses on this island.   He was called to be the Gospel Doctrine Teacher recently and is starting to enjoy it.   

In April, we enjoyed spending a week in Capistrano Beach with the entire Peirce Family to celebrate mom and dad’s anniversary.   What an amazing trip we all had together!

Nathan & Robyn and Family:  Our clan has survived another year and we’d like to give you a short summary.  Consistent with past years, we stayed busy with work, scouting, karate, reading, board games, video games, and church activity.  But we also had several new developments in 2011 that combined to suck up every last minute of our collective free time.   Collin entered high school and began seminary.  Cora became a curious toddler.   We finished two big home improvement proects.  Nathan got into adventure cycling.  Sydney and Owen took after-school Spanish.  Randy played tennis.  To top it off, Robyn signed us up for a summer exchange student.   Nils came to us from Germany for five fun and informative weeks.  

Nathan remains with Intel and Robyn is a full time mom.  Our kids Collin, Randy, Owen, Sydney, and Cora are 14, 12, 9, 7, and 2 respectively.  We feel blessed to have this group of children.  They bring something different to the family.   Dad has to fight dirty rooms and mom has to fight homework procrastination, but for the most part they are good kids.   In addition to what was mentioned above, here are a few more things of interest.

• Randy ordained a deacon

• Owen won both the pinewood derby and the space derby

• Our big vacation was a visit to San Diego to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary

• Sydney learned to ride a bike

• Nathan and Collin did several 50 and 100 mile cycling trips

• Cora started talking

• Collin played in the marching band

• Robyn continues to volunteer at school 

Shanna & Tom and Family: The highlight of our year was celebrating our mom and dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary in Southern California.   We had such a blast being together with the whole family to honor our parents.  The beach house views were incredible and having the ocean as our backyard was absolutely amazing.  We enjoyed SeaWorld, LegoLand, and some way-too-scary thrill rides at Knottsberry Farm.  But the most fun we had was being all together!   We are so thankful for our parents and their legacy of love that they’ve given our family. 

Here is a quick update of our kiddos.   Sage (age almost 14) started a new adventure at a charter school in Herriman, Providence Jr. High.   She has really enjoyed it so far, uniforms and all.   She plans to go there next year also.   She’s a talented dancer, singer, and when she has time, she practices the piano.  Tanner (age 11) is our little drummer boy (well..he’s not so little anymore).   He started playing percussion in the school band and is quite a natural.  He, like most boys his age, really enjoys playing video games!  He’s also into sports, i.e. basketball, flag football, and is a very good swimmer.   Brynn (age 7) is our star performer...she loves to sing, dance, and do gymnastics.  She also enjoys her soccer team...especially when they dressed up in costume for one of the games right before Halloween.  How fun, huh?  Little puppies, princesses, and even Harry Potter were running down the field to try and make a goal!  I think she’ll always remember that.   Grace (age 2 1/2) is our little ‘free spirit’.  She’s so adorable and fun; she gives great hugs and kisses and says such cute things.  (This definitely makes up for the spilled nail polish all over the carpet or the permanent marker drawings all over the house.)   Lately, she’s really into animals and likes to pretend she’s a puppy.   We are so thankful to have her and all our children in our family!

Tom has been able to spend a lot more time outdoors this year...backpacking, hiking, four-wheeling, mountain biking, and skiing.   He plans these fun outings to do with our kids.   I think they are pretty lucky to have a dad like that!  I did a little of my own outdoor adventure by completing a Spring Triathalon.   I took on this challenge with several neighborhood friends and it was a great experience.  I hope to do another one this spring.  I am still enjoying teaching preschool and serving in the young women’s presidency.

Sherman & Jocelyn and Family:  This year finds us bigger (Sherman) and better (everyone else).  On July 13, after struggling for two years to get pregnant and stay pregnant, we finally welcomed our 4th child into the world:  Megan Lydia.   Megan came with a calm personality IF everything is going her way, but when she’s mad, she’s really, really mad.   There is no in between with her.   Her brothers and sister adore her.   She is definitely going to be spoiled!

Braden is 10 1/2 years old, and in the 5th grade.  He is a great student, always working hard and having fun.   His favorite subject in school is math.  He is really developing his sense of humor, and it is fun to watch him grow up (although it is a little sad, too).   Braden loves cub scouts and can’t wait for his last pinewood derby race this month.

Landon is 8 1/2 years old and in the 3rd grade.  He was baptized this summer.   It was a special day for him because he got to share it with his baby sister.   Megan was blessed on the same day.   Landon is still in the Chinese immersion program at our school.   He seems to really enjoy it, though I still wonder if it’s worth it.  I do enjoy hearing him speak Chinese.   He looks forward to participating in his first pinewood derby later this month.

Madalyn is 4 1/2 years old and in preschool.  She is thrilled that she finally gets to go to school like her brothers.   She has always strived to be like them.   Maddie is our little star.  She shines wherever she goes.   She wins over the hearts of the people with whom she speaks with her bubbly personality and the pure joy that she exudes.   She is always singing songs that she makes up - what a joy she is in our lives. 

Jocelyn is trying to survive with a baby and 3 other children.  It is hard to keep track of the day-to-day activities and schedules, but she loves being a mom.   Her children are what keep her going.   She is still serving in the primary presidency, and still loving it.   What a great place to be!

Sherman is still working very hard to grow his practice.   Things are going well, and we see evidence that things are picking up.  He loves his job and is good at it.   He is currently serving as the ward executive secretary.   When he isn’t working on his practice, he is working on his calling.   He is very busy, and sometimes his kids wonder where their father is, but we are very grateful for his great sacrifice and service.   We know we are being blessed.

Besides having a baby and Landon being baptized, the highlight of this year was a family trip to California to celebrate our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.  We stayed in a house right on the beach and it was so much fun!   We enjoyed going to the amusement parks and the countless activities.  I think the best part was just being together for a whole week and celebrating what our family has become, thanks to our wonderful parents.

We are grateful for our family and the blessings that come from being a part of this wonderful family.   We recognize the strength that comes from such strong family ties.  We hope this newsletter finds you all healthy and happy!

Brian & Becky and Family:  2011 was a wonderful year for the Brian Peirce family.  Becky and I started 2011 with a brand new baby girl that we named Ella.   She is our first child and she gets all of our attention.  So far everything she does is just simply cute.   We even love her cries.   She took her first unassisted steps on Christmas day while we were with mom and dad.  It thrilled us all.   She loves to talk and look at herself in the mirror.  Perhaps she gets the latter trait from her father!  Prior to Ella, Becky and I were free to do as we wanted, but we don’t mind at all that our baby has curtailed our adventurous activities a bit.   However, we did go on two wonderful trips this year: my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary celebration in California and Becky’s parents’ 40th wedding anniversary trip to Florida.  We had a lot of fun with our families and we are mindful about how wonderful it is that both sets of our parents value marriage and each other so highly.   We did go on our annual Hebgen Lake trip with Becky’s family as well.  I am still trying to get accepted into a radiography program.  It has taken a little longer than we had hoped.   I have taken a number of college courses to enhance my chances of getting accepted.   In the meantime, I am still working full time at the Department of Workforce Services - Unemployment Insurance Office as a benefits auditor.   Becky is working part-time as a dental assistant for her father.              

JoAnn & Earle Celebrate 50 Years

Last summer the Aunts & Uncles celebrated JoAnn and Earle’s 50th Wedding Anniversary with a wonderful meal, program, and reminiscing in Lon & Steph’s lovely home and yard. Our memories of that courtship and all that has followed since has sometimes been amusing, sometimes quite serious, and always very dear to us. The following are just some of the memories recorded that evening.

KAY: We have always been impressed with your love and sacrifice for your children. You were so proud of all their accomplishments. They and gospel living came first before anything else. Now that love and devotion have included your grandchildren, as well. Your Sunday get-togethers, baby sitting, and well-planned, fun trips make it evident.

Your support of each other in your jobs has always been impressive, even though, at times, you may have wished the other to be employed in something else. JoAnn was always so proud to talk about Earle’s 6th grade musicals and his fairness as a teacher and Earle was always so proud to boast about JoAnn’s expertise and leadership at Motorola and Comp Health.

To bring in extra money, you took on a paper route, and then another, and another....and became area managers. Those early mornings went on for years. I think we were all amazed at your hard work ethic and your stick-to-it-iveness.

Your perfectionistic natures in many things have been impressive. Your home and gardens have always been show-places; they are always neat, clean, organized, and beautiful. It seems that every year you are involved in a remodeling or painting project. You know how to put on a party or get-together so that things flow. Your yummy treats and welcoming skills make everyone glad to attend. Many of our Hinckley events have been upgraded because of your direct or indirect influence.

Despite your differences, you complement each other. Earle, your piano playing and singing have always delighted JoAnn and the whole family. Those musical talents have taken root in your children. Your avid tennis playing has kept you healthy, active, and well-balanced. Your special diet (I’ll never forget the restaurant waiters in Branson trying to accommodate you and the special containers of food on other family trips) has kept you alive, healthy, and sooo slim. JoAnn, your executive, organizational, cooking and decorating skills have brought balance to your relationship and family. JoAnn, you still love all kinds of food and chocolate is high on your list. It’s great how you just accept each other’s preferences and move on. You both love and live the gospel. You have fulfilled many wonderful church callings. You “get” what really matters.

Your years working on genealogy, and working in the temple, and your decision to fulfill a mission have inspired all of us. Your passion as you reported your mission experiences will never be forgotten. Talk about team work!

We can especially relate to your love of traveling together to beautiful and historic sites.

The way you both treat other people is so praiseworthy. Every time I call your home, I am greeted with a cheerful voice. Every time the family gets together, you are so happy to see us, and seem so genuinely interested in our lives.

Happy 50th Anniversary!

LOUISE: All of my siblings are and have been my favorites for different reasons. JoAnn was my favorite for teaching me to march and forcing me to practice every day when I was about 9 years old, until I was chosen mascot for West High’s pep club. I have so many happy memories associated with that time in my life; teaching/assisting me in making a pink dress with a full skirt for myself; encouraging me in my art and dieting; and so much more! AND she was so pretty. No wonder so many young men vied for her hand.

When JoAnn & Earle were dating it was so romantic. Kay and I used to watch them from our bedroom door as they sat close together on the sofa. And when Earle wrote and sang “JoAnn” I was completely won over!

All I remember about their wedding day 50 years ago, was the pretty watermelon colored dress, hair topper and shoes I got to wear in the reception line. Seems like it was my first time to wear nylons and I felt so grown up and so elegant.

Not too long after their wedding they were living in a little apartment some where in SLC – probably by the “U”, and JoAnn invited me over for lunch. We made pizza from scratch. I can still remember the taste of the pepperoni she sliced for us to snack on while the pizza was baking.

JoAnn and Earle were living in Arizona when mom and dad presided over the The Alaskan Canadian Mission, and lived in Vancouver BC. Susan & I were attending BYU and couldn’t get up to Vancouver for Thanksgiving. We did however find a “harrowing” ride to and from Arizona and were grateful for JoAnn and Earle’s hospitality and so impressed with their cute and talented kids.

After Cros and I married, I began to be aware of certain characteristics possessed by JoAnn and Earle that impressed me greatly and had a  positive influence in our marriage.........although we still have a long ways to go.....specifically: JoAnn’s immaculate and perfectly decorated home, her exceptional creativity and ability to throw a great party; Earle’s music, his smile and his absolute patience. Have you ever known Earle to “lose it”? And they both have this uncanny ability to make everyone feel important and talented. We’re still trying to follow their example in even more important ways: The way they have dealt with the challenges of life, while remaining united as a family and positive in their outlook, and serving faithfully in the church. I think they have it all and I still want to be like JoAnn when I grow up.

HAROLD: I bought a car in the mission field and had to drive it home. I drove straight through to Tempe Arizona, and was so thrilled to have some place to sleep and rest. For 2 years you’re with someone the whole time and then for a day and half I was alone in the car and it was just good to be with someone again, someone that you knew liked you and cared for you. It was great to have them there and so willing to receive me for a couple of days.

The thing that always impressed me was yours and Earle’s ability to keep your house nice, especially at Christmas time.  I look at you, and Lon & Steph, and what you do with your homes at Christmas time and think that’s what Dad wanted. An absolutely beautiful place at Christmas time. It takes a lot of work to do that.

A few years ago when Jessie and Don started having some problems, who took over the family? Naturally, comfortably, and without any fanfare, JoAnn with Earle’s assistance, took over as the “matriarch” of our family. With mother gone and Jessie somewhat incapacitated, JoAnn and Earle comfortably guided this family very effectively. That’s the way it should be in the family and in the Church.

I have to say I have always appreciated the two personalities. Earle, I’m saying this with all love, you are the most laid back person I know. JoAnn recognized that pretty early, and JoAnn is a take control kind of person. I have always appreciated JoAnn’s willingness to just step right to the plate at any time there was a need, for your own family, or this family, or whatever was needed in the church or community or whatever. Admired your gumption and up and at ‘em attitude. There’s nothing you’re afraid to go after. (Earle interjected here that on their mission she was the best companion he could have had because he didn’t have to say hardly anything.)

LON: I have so many good memories of JoAnn and Earle, but I won’t go into all of them.......so many have already been mentioned.  JoAnn was just younger and Jessie was just older than me all through school. And they wondered how Jessie and I could have come from the same family as she got such good grades and I didn’t. Then JoAnn comes along and everyone knew JoAnn because she was one of the cutest girls at West High. It was fun to be known by my two sisters that I was sandwiched between in High School. It did however put a little pressure on me.

I have so admired the way that you and Earle have dealt with disappointments and trials, never giving up but moving forward with absolute faith and optimism. 

(Stephanie interjected here that she still remembers the tune of the song Earle composed for JoAnn, and hummed it for us. Earle said “What a memory!” Stephanie said she was so impressed at the wedding luncheon when Earle sang it and she so wanted to be a member of this family.)

SUSAN: One of the first times I ever met Earle was when he was singing in a quartet at ZCMI during the Christmas season – dressed up like an elf! I was very impressed that he was ‘secure enough in his manhood’ to not let the elf costume bother him.

JoAnn has always been an amazing woman to me. It has always been an honor for me to be identified as her sister. I remember one time doing a long term sub at her place of employment, CompHealth. I worked there for about six weeks and never ceased to be amazed at how productive and efficient JoAnn was. Even in that high stress environment, she always remained upbeat and cheerful. She could run circles around everyone there. Everyone seemed to recognized her exceptional abilities and greatly respected her. I just kind of strutted around the office feeling very important to be related to her.

My early remembrances of JoAnn are during her high school and college years. She was a fascinating study of a young woman’s school and dating activities. It was hard to keep up with everything she did. As Mother described it; JoAnn had a ‘steady stream’ of boys at her doorstep. I heartily agree. I’ve probably opened more doors for JoAnn’s boyfriends than I have any other doors since. I remember many years after I was married and living in Bountiful, our bishop, out of the ‘clear-blue’, asked me if I was JoAnn’s sister. When I said I was, he stated that he had dated her at one time. There was a touch of wistfulness in his voice. I mentioned this to JoAnn but she didn’t remember him. Of course, how could she remember just one of dozens of boys she had dated during that time. So, when JoAnn became ‘sweet’ on Earle, not only did we like him better than any of the others, we hoped that maybe things would calm down around our house. And they did.

About the only thing I remember of the Peirce wedding was the beautiful song Earle wrote for JoAnn and sang to her. It was a touching moment and truly romantic. I’ve yearned to hear him sing that song to her again ever since.

JoAnn and Earle are a perfectly balanced couple; Earle calm and laid back, while JoAnn is more ‘disposed to action’ and always on the go. Their wonderful personalities truly blend which create a powerful presence wherever they are.

Both JoAnn and Earle have very engaging smiles that create warmth and trust. People are immediately drawn to them.

This couple is a dynamic duo. When they put their minds to something, it always gets done to it’s maximum best. It’s all in the details – and every detail is examined carefully, honed, and executed perfectly.

If we were to continue the list of things we appreciate about JoAnn and Earle, the list would be long. But among the top most things that come to mind are: their love and respect for each other, their generosity, their ability to entertain so graciously, their beautiful home and gardens, their infectious positive attitude, and their incredible work ethic.

Thank you, JoAnn and Earle, for your wonderful example of church service. Your enthusiasm and dedication to your mission was particularly inspiring and motivating. Thank you, JoAnn, for your whimsical, joyful approach to life. Thanks for those long, beautiful fingers that were so nimble that none of us could keep up with you during those long collating sessions. Thank you, Earle, for your strong, clear voice as one of our Singing Uncles. Thank you for your dedication to diet and exercise. You are truly amazing. Finally, to both of you; thanks for arranging for us to see the Chain Saw Juggler. We love you. 

JEAN: With JoAnn being the sister just older than me, there were many things I remember looking up to her for as I was growing up over the years. It just seemed like JoAnn was good at everything she tried. She didn’t have to take lessons. She didn’t have to practice, she was just automatically a natural, and I was just the opposite.  I used to think, how come it comes so easily to her? She hated going to our swimming lessons, but swam without any effort at all; while I loved going to swimming lessons and couldn’t swim a lick. And she was that way with everything she tried. She was amazing at typing, and right from the beginning was the fastest one in every class. We used to play house a lot together and we had our imaginary boyfriends, and when JoAnn chose “Bill” for her imaginary boyfriend he was automatically the one I wanted. 

JoAnn is an amazing person and she has made a huge difference in this family with the way she does plan things in detail and so beautifully and artistically.

I remember working with JoAnn at the hospital and how everybody loved her and how amazing she was. All the interns were always in her office. There was one in particular that you used to invite over for lunch quite often.

And it’s true Earle, she could have had any body she wanted, but she chose YOU......and that says A LOT about you, and how amazing you are for her to see the wonderful person that you are and wanting to choose you as her eternal companion. And I’ve admired you because I think you have been so patient and so supportive with all of JoAnn’s projects by being right there by her side. It’s just wonderful.

And we remember coming to your home when you were in Arizona too. We got in a sand storm and had never been through an experience like that. 

JESSIE: Sitting here with you tonight...........haven’t we gone through some real life experiences these last few years. Some of you are coming to see me on a regular basis. It seems like just yesterday we were taking mother to appointments. Time really flies. We’ve had some very spiritual experiences and I feel very close to our parents. I don’t know where there’s a more wonderful family on earth. Please keep coming to visit me, all of you. (JoAnn interjected “Every time we go to visit Jessie we come away lifted up.”)

I happened to be at the folks’ home the day that Earle got the bad news about his heart. He sat down at the kitchen table, obviously in a little bit of shock I think, and he told me what was wrong. I said well what can I fix you for lunch. He said “Well, I’m starting right now on a diet for the rest of my life.” And he made that decision right there. I have never heard him complain. How many years has that been Earle? Earle said “Sixteen!” I remember that, just the fact that he made up his mind immediately what was the right thing to do and he did it. I firmly believe that he’s here today because of that.

I guess JoAnn and I were very close because we were the two oldest. We shared a bedroom and that was a major experience. To be honest with you I’ve never seen anything like it. She’d bawl me out regularly because I’d do such and such. But it was a wonderful time. Wonderful. Wonderful. You’re a wonderful couple just to sit and look at. And Earle, what a beautiful couple. 

I do love you JoAnn & Earle, and congratulations on a major, major accomplishment. It’s interesting, I told one of my friends at the center where we were going to night and why. She asked how long you have been married? When I said 50 years, she looked at me like “Nobody stays together that long!” She was stunned. So I think we have a good corner on something eternal and wonderful. You’re a wonderful example.

Anyway, it’s late.  It’s time now to close this meeting.

Harold asked Jess and Don how many years for the two of them? She said 52. Talk about wonderful!

Following these tributes Earle sang his song to JoAnn. The one he composed for her before they were married and has sung to her every year on their anniversary. JoAnn told us that one year they were on a bus tour on their anniversary and Earle went up to the front of the bus and borrowed the microphone from the driver and sang to JoAnn so everyone could hear. I’ll bet there wasn’t a dry eye on the bus.

Lon (Grampa)—hosted a remarkable summer party for ALL Hinckley siblings & spouses, drives a big truck (Dirty Devil Disposal), serves in the Salt Lake temple (ordinance worker & sealer), teaches ward High Priests, finished Gramma’s “bonus room” over the garage (complete with TV, Wii, & Hexbug Habitat), grows a BIG garden, cooks squash & eats it!

Stephanie (Gramma)—70 years old, wonderful surprise celebration from her family, ward choir director, Bicenntenial Book Club, Treasurers’ Club, organ lessons, Mu Phi Epsilon music fraternity, Salt Lake Area Chairman UFMC (Utah Federation of Music Clubs), UMTA (Utah Music Teachers Association), piano teacher to 11 grandchildren & 22 neighbors, loves Facebook & chocolate!

Camille (18)—senior at Bountiful High, 4.0 student, loves Davis Youth & Utah Youth orchestras (cello), loves piano (60 pt. gold cup winner), ward choir accompanist, scored 32 on ACT, scholarships coming in, fun, delightful.

Stephen (20)—missionary in Managua Nicaragua, loves the people, loves the work, loves the language, was incomprehensible on the Christmas phone call, completes mission in June 2012.

Tea (8)—ice skater, soccer shooter, piano player, swimmer, activity day girl, new church member (baptized).

Maddie (6½)—ice skater, 1st grader, soccer player, fast reader, swimmer, paper painter, journal writer.

Nate (3½)—brother wrestler, no training wheel bike rider, book lover, ice slider, go- getter, fast talker.

Sam (1½) - fast grower, big eater, growler, good sleeper, brother tackler.

Milligan Moments 2011

Uncle Don & Aunt Jessie:    

Our parents continue to set a great example of optimistic perseverance in every aspect of their lives.  Mom resides at Barton Creek, an assisted living center in Bountiful and Dad lives in his home.  While they miss being together under the same roof, they spend many hours together each day.  Dad has become proficient in using public transportation which allows some freedom and independence from his kids. Most every Saturday mom and dad spend the day together in their home.  Dad always prepares a healthy and often colorful lunch for mom.  Mom and dad spend Sunday afternoons/evenings with Don and Kathy eating dinner, playing games and telling stories.  As their children, we love our parents and are proud of them in every way.

Don & Kathy: Kathy and I feel blessed beyond measure as parents and grandparents.  At the moment, we are empty nesters and truly enjoy each others’ company.  While we miss our children it is wonderful to be able to communicate with and keep up with them with the magic of cell phones, Skype, Facetime, email, etc.

Meagan, Luke and their 14 month old son Crue (our first grandchild), live in Glendale AZ.  Luke is attending Midwestern University where he is about half way  through his PhD in clinical psychology.  Luke spends a lot of time at school and when he’s not at school, he spends many hours volunteering in clinical settings.  He is learning a great deal and truly enjoys the degree and professional pathway he has selected. Meagan has temporally retired from nursing and is thrilled to spend time with Crue.  Some of their favorite things to do include swimming and taking long walks. Given the wonderful Arizona weather, they can do these things outdoors year round.

Mason married Taylor Ann Pickett this past August in the Bountiful Temple.  Taylor grew up in Centerville Utah and is the oldest of four children.  Mason and Taylor met while working at the South Davis Recreation Center.  Mason currently works as a valet at Huntsman Cancer Hospital.  He continues as the wrestling coach at Woods Cross High School and is also a full time student at Weber State University.  Mason will graduate with a degree in history; he plans to teach high school  and coach wrestling.  Taylor is in her first year of the nursing program at Weber State University; she enjoys her studies and will be a great nurse. She also continues her employment at the recreation center.  Mason and Taylor live in the basement apartment in Don and Jessie’s home; it is nice to have them there as they assist in many ways.

Marshall and Amanda live in a mouse infested apartment in Albany NY.  Marshall attends Albany Law School and is half way through his law degree.  Marshall indicates that the second year of law school is much better than the first year.  Amanda is three classes away from receiving her bachelors degree.  Amanda works at Michaels Craft store as a manager. Marshall and Amanda have a dog named Karmen; Karmen has flown back and forth between SLC and NY so many times during these past two years that we think she has more frequent flyer miles than anyone in the family. Marshall and Amanda recently announced that their first child, a boy, will be arriving in mid June. We are thrilled and excited for them.

Kathy and I continue to serve in our callings in our ward in the Young Women’s and Young Men’s organizations.  We enjoy being with the youth and hope to remain in our callings for many years.  I work at Huntsman Cancer Hospital which is part of University of Utah Hospital.  I’ve worked there for 15 years as director of out patient and ancillary services. Kathy is always busy taking care of our family and our parents.  Kathy and I continue to run together.  This year we will participate in a few marathons and a 100 mile trail run in the early fall.

John & Janette: John is still teaching at Davis Jr. High, and in his off time is correcting papers on-line for a local college. Janette is recovering from several surgeries, and just trying to keep up with the kids. Jason is currently stationed in Washington State, but will be leaving for Korea in July. Adam is home from the military and he will be starting college at Weber State in July. Kelsey is attending Salt Lake Community College on scholarship majoring in Bio-Technology. Shelby is a Senior at Davis High School, already has her CNA and has plans to pursue a degree in nursing.

Matt & Becca Milligan: 2011 was a great year for us.  Nate was accepted into a manager trainee program with Winco foods, and is now apprenticing in Redding California.  Bethany and Jackson are loving it there with him. 

Maiclinn is excelling in school, Karate and piano.  She recently participated in the spelling bee.  She is extremely talented and surrounded by friends.

Meliah is even more social than Maiclinn, and is also doing great in school, piano and Karate. She is the youngest member of our karate class, and everyone there is impressed with her.

Becca continues to work at the college, currently coordinating the Job and Career Fair.  Even with cutbacks, we are blessed that they always invite her back for more work.  

Matt’s practice is doing great.  

We are happy to have finally sold the big house in the country, and moved into a beautiful house in the city that Becca had had as a rental when we were married.  We had the luxury of spending a month fixing it up before we moved in, and really love the hardwood floors that we installed.  Our lives have become infinitely simpler by the move, and we are really grateful that we could unload the old place in this economy.

Tom & Tiffany Milligan: (Josh, Gage, Cole, Connor)

2011 was an eventful year for our family.  After spending 2 years developing an outsourcing practice for inContact, Tom partnered with one of his customers – a call center company in the Philippines called Vector BPO – to sell their services to US companies.  Vector has been around for a few years, but desperately needed some help in finding new business.  After a tough year, things are beginning to look up.

Tiffany left Adobe after about a year to pursue her music career.  She’s learned that she really loves writing, playing and recording the music, but the editing and finishing seems to be pure drudgery.  Regardless, she’s finishing work on her debut album and has much of the next album recorded.  We’re all very excited to see her album finished and available.

Josh is 14 and in 8th grade.  Like most teens, he likes to sleep, listen to music (and thankfully it’s good music), hanging out with his friends, girls, and he hates school.  Josh continues to progress rapidly in Shaolin and spends many hours each week practicing in the studio.  It’s fun to watch him turn into a true teenager.

Gage is 12 and in 7th grade.  Gage is a very talented pianist and loves to play.  He also spends every afternoon in the pool, swimming for the Kearns Youth Aquatics Team – and attends most meets.  As if that’s not enough, he also plays competitive water polo and recently attended a 4-day advanced training at the Olympic training facility in Colorado Springs.  We’re glad he loves it since it takes the place of almost everything else.

Coleman is also 12 and in 7th grade and LOVES school – especially the social aspect.  Coleman is so fun to be around.  Unlike his twin brother, Coleman never enjoyed the piano and after years of negotiation, has switched to the trombone and seems to really enjoy it.  Coleman plays goalie on JOGA – a local competitive soccer team – and spends 2-3 nights per week at practice at their indoor facility in preparation for the first tournament over President’s Day weekend in St. George.

Connor is 10 and in 4th grade.  He’s so tall and mature that we constantly have to remind ourselves that he’s only 10.  Connor also plays competitive soccer.  He plays forward most of the time during the winter (indoor seasons) and goalie during the spring, summer, and fall seasons.  His team is also deep into preparation for the St. George tournament.

We’re very proud of our boys for their accomplishments.  But most importantly, we’re proud of the way they honor their Priesthood and serve the Lord.

Sara & Gordon: 

Hello Family, We had a wonderful 2011!  

Kayle (19) started off the year with a bang!  She did a student intern program at Disney World the first quarter of 2011.  She missed out on the lovely winter weather in both Rexburg and Chicago.  Lucky Girl.  The whole family was able to spend spring break there with her, thanks to the wonderful discounts given to employees of Disney.  It was a blast to see her and Disney World is the happiest place on earth!  She loved it there and made lots of new friends from all over the world!  Then she went back to school at BYUI.  She loves college, and college life!  She has a better understanding of the importance of good roommates. She hates the girl Drama!  She is also concerned about everyone being in such a hurry to get married!?!?  She hasn’t quite narrowed down her major, but she wants to work in the medical field.  Maybe a Physical therapist or dental hygentist.  She was able to come home for a month in the Summer and work at Six Flags and then it was back to college.  We spent Thanksgiving in Utah and had a nice visit with her and then she has been home for the Holidays!

Jack (5) is all boy.  He loves to tackle and wrestle anyone and everyone, so you have to keep your eye on him.  His big sister Madi  gets pummeled regularly!  He is a great wrestler and we are sure he will do this someday.  He loves video games especially Mario. We just got the Wii (ok we are behind a little) and that has been a hit for the whole family especially Jack.  He loves food!!!  He is a MEAT and potatoes boy, but he skips the potatoes!  His favorite food is hot dogs and he would eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if we let him.  He is in his final year of preschool, and can’t wait to go on the big bus with his sister, Madi.

Madi (6) is Madi!  She has earned the “Best in Drama” award in our family, six years running.  She started 1st grade and was nervous at first.  Now she loves it.  She is doing very well.  She lost 4 teeth and was so excited that the tooth fairy came.  Her new goal is to lose a tooth at school because she gets a prize at school and the tooth fairy comes.  She is taking piano lessons from a dear friend of ours, Nicole.  Nicole is from France and she has the best teaching methods for children.  Madi participates in Theraplay which helps her learn better self control and control her emotions.  Madi loves to dance.  She got Just Dance 3 for the Wii and she can show you a move or two.  We need to get her into some dance lessons.

Sara is serving in the Nursery.....the truest part of the church.  She brings HOME MADE suckers every week for the kids and they really love her.  They call her the sucker lady!  Sara stays very involved with the kids, she volunteers at their schools.  Our house is the “Kool-Aid” house and we usually have 5 extra kids on a daily basis.  She is very creative and made Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head costumes for Gordon and her.  She also made Love Sacks (Bean Bag Chairs) for the kids for Christmas.  She always has a project going on.  She is a wonderful chef, designer, playmate, and friend!  She still loves living in Illinois even in the cold!

Gordon continues to work his head off for Discover Card.  He serves as the 1st counselor in the Bishopric and is trying to earn his MBA.  Needless to say.....we never see him.  He loves the Wii too!  He loves playing the sports (bowling, golfing, and tennis) and is always looking for someone to play with him.   

We had some notable experiences in 2011.  

In February 2011 we had a blizzard here in Chicago.  20 inches of snow in less than 24 hours.  We were tubing from our back patio there was so much snow.  Needless to say we had a few snow days and loved it!

We were able to spend Thanksgiving in Utah with the Searle’s this year.  We spent some great time with Mom and Dad Milligan.  They surprise us every time we visit.  We took them to the temple and they survived the whole session.  We were so proud of them.

So grateful to be part of this amazing family!  Love to all!!

Recipe Roundup

JoAnn’s Mandarin Orange Green Salad

1 head romaine lettuce

1/2 head iceberg lettuce

1/4 head red leaf lettuce

4 green onions, chopped

2 c. celery, chopped

2 c. swiss cheese, grated

1 lb. bacon, cooked and crumbled

1 c. sugared slivered almonds

2 (11 oz) cans mandarin oranges, well drained

1 tsp. grated orange peel

2/3 c. frozen orange juice concentrate

4 Tbsp. red wine vinegar

1 pkg. Good Seasons Italian salad dressing mix

1 c. oil

4 Tbsp. sugar 

Mix dressing by comgining orange peel, orange juice, red wine vinegar, dressing mix, oil, and sugar in a blender. Combine almonds with 1/4 cup sugar in a non-stick pan. Cook and stir over medium heat until golden brown. Cool.  Toss salad ingredients and serve with dressing.

JoAnn’s Lemon Crinkle Cookies

1/2 cup butter, softened 1/4 tsp. salt

1 cup granulated sugar 1/4 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/8 tsp.  baking soda

1 whole egg 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp. lemon zest 1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease light colored baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.   In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.  Whip vanilla, egg, lemon zest and lemon juice.  Scrape sides and mix again.   Stir in all dry ingredients slowly until just combined, excluding the powdered sugar.  Scrape sides of bowl and mix again briefly.   Pour powdered sugar onto large plate.   Roll a heaping teaspoon of dough into a ball and roll in powdered sugar and place on baking sheet.   Bake for 9-11 minutes until bottoms begin to barely brown.   Cool for about 3 minutes before transferring to cooling rack.

Louise's “CHRISTMAS” PIE

8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 1/2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed

9-inch graham cracker crust

1 cup fresh raspberries (I used frozen)

1 cup water, divided

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cornstarch

1/2 3-oz. pkg. raspberry Jello

Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth; fold in whipped topping. Spread over crust; set aside. Place raspberries and 2/3 cup water in a saucepan; simmer for 3 minutes. Whisk sugar, cornstarch and remaining 1/3 cup water in a small bowl until smooth; add to raspberry mixture. Boil one minute, whisking constantly. Remove from heat. Add Jello, whisking until smooth. Cool 5-7 minutes; pour over cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate 8 hours or until firm.

The Cousin Connection

It was good to see so many (approximately 80) at the Cousin Connection this year. All looked wonderful and happy! Spencer Cannon was in charge along with Katie and their spouses, with help from Kay & Ned. 

We met at Grandma & Grandpa Hinckley’s grave and listened to a tape recording of Grandpa reciting the poem “The Builder” by Longfellow*. (It was so good to hear Father Hinckley’s voice again!) Harold then talked to us about Grandpa’s life as a “builder” and challenged each of us to be “builders” as well.

Then we went to Ralph Johnson’s grave, and the rest of the program was centered around him. Ralph was our hired hand on the farm, and an integral part of our family for over 20 years. Wish you all could have been there for Sue and Lon’s presentations. They were incredible. Ralph was incredible. (Hopefully all of you have received your copy of his story as written by Mother Hinckley, to which have been added photographs etc. and have enjoyed reading it, and sharing it with your children.) We hope you all will remember him as if he were a beloved ancestor, for we are the only “descendents” he has, and the only ones on earth we know of who can keep his memory alive.

As you know, our Cousin Connections are held every other year. In his opening remarks Spencer noted that even though it had been 2 years since our last “Connection”, we have been united as a family in our faith and prayers for those individuals in the family who have experienced serious challenges in the interim. Janiel Howell Pyper,  Laura Howell Perry, Tiffany Howell, Jonathan Hinckley, Aunt Diane, and Aunt Jessie & Uncle Don.........what wonderful examples they all are of accepting with faith and growing through adversity.

It was a very special evening. It is a very special family!
